Ion channel modeling is necessary for cardiac modeling. It tracks the cellular processes occurring such as ion transfers across the cell membrane. Especially important, it tracks the calcium transient. This is what triggers the muscle contraction throughout the tissue. Ion modeling has to be done very carefully because these are stiff nonlinear ODEs that must be solved over all the nodes of the finite element mesh.
